If it required a fight sequence on a tram in Athens… then that’s what we were going to get. There was no over stretching of plot lines. It was the simplicity achieved for this latest instalment. I felt momentarily like singing the old agency ditty in which I was trained on Lincoln Bridge in 2005: “Carry me back to Old Virginia.” To salute as the Brit caught into the fantasy having learned to enjoy my meat… Damon was and is… back… and this film had me feeling proud and on top… that cinema… as propaganda… can truly work. If it is the least good of the franchise, its still miles better than most action films, and I include Bond in that.Īn advertisement for the best of the fantasy of the State of Virginia. Its slick, it's lean, and it has a lot of what makes Bourne good.
However, I really did enjoy this film much more watching it again.
By the end of the film, Bourne is out for revenge, and it feels notably colder. Some of these elements make the film feel slightly more in line with the likes of Liam Neeson's Taken - the thrills are there, but the quick-thinking spy-on-the-run dynamic fades into the background a bit. Not a bad idea for a story, but it takes things into slightly formulaic territory, with the opposing Treadstone asset even holding a long-standing grudge against Bourne himself. Instead, we learn about his father, and how young Bourne got tangled up in the program to start with. As Bourne remembers most of the details of his Treadstone past, the driving force of the earlier films is mostly gone. What's less good : the writers are painting themselves into a corner a bit at this point. The setpieces are as well done as you'd expect of Paul Greengrass, and the action is top-notch. Matt Damon is great as Bourne, taking serious knocks and gamely running about like a man fifteen years younger. You can't blame the producers for that, but the result doesn't always thrill in the manner of the older ones. Jason Bourne (not a great name for the film) is both a return to the Damon era, but also a break from it, and it's clearly making conscious choices to advance the plot in a fresh way. In fact, the Bourne films really benefit from being watched back to back - especially the much-maligned Bourne Legacy, which is not only a better film than it gets credit for, but a really clever way to make a Bourne film with no Bourne. On rewatch, it's much better than I recall.

Somewhere along the road I stopped giving the series much attention, and though I had previously caught this film, I'd not really given it much attention at the time. Like many people, I got Bourne fatigue at one point, with this series spanning 15 years by the time of Bourne 5.
